The story goes that Lederman originally wanted to call the volume The Damned Particle because it was difficult to detect, but his publisher, Delta, persuaded him to shorten it. However, its publishers didn't quite agree with that wording, so the title was changed to The God Particle. Much of the media coverage of the announcement included the term God particle, which originated in the title of a 1994 book by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman.
First, the publisher did not allow us to call it the Damned Particle, although that might be a more appropriate title, given its evil nature and the expenses it is causing.
